Goals
- Grow a community of activists who learn a protest repertoire and are ready to become song “leaders” wherever people gather for justice – inspiring everyone to sing along with the power of our collective voices and spirit.
- Compile a contemporary repertoire of protest music, including old favorites and new songs.
- Be a part of reviving a singing tradition in our social justice movements.
The Music
We are not performers, we are song leaders. Our goal is to get everybody singing!
- Our songs are simple and easy to learn, so that any size crowd can readily join in and feel the power of raising our voices together in song.
- We sing some of the great old protest songs, and we are also building a more contemporary repertoire.
- We will happily customize the lyrics for each action, using zipper songs where key words specific to any issue or struggle can be inserted.
Here’s How It Works
There are many ways to learn the BVOCAL repertoire, build community, and take action! Join us for any or all of these opportunities to make the power of collective singing a part of our social justice movements.
SINGING RESISTANCE COMMUNITY SINGS (quarterly)
An introduction to many of the new movement songs that are meeting the moment, collaboratively led by BVOCAL, Boston Area Singing Circles, and other guest song leaders
BVOCAL PRACTICE SINGS (semi-monthly)
Where we get connected as a community, learn the repertoire and simple harmonies, prepare to take action, and build our singing movement for the long haul. Practice Sings take place twice a month, rotating days of the week and neighborhood.
REHEARSALS
Scheduled as needed for special, one-time events.
SING IN THE STREETS
Take action through song! The songs are easy to learn and anyone is welcome to sing with us at marches, rallies, picket lines, and more.
Political Alignment
We are united by our shared commitment to human rights and resistance to the Trump agenda and the threat of fascism. This does not mean that we will agree on every issue, nor will we always agree on strategy. We believe that to succeed, the resistance requires ALL of us: a broad coalition that is building people power. Every person has a contribution to make. We strive to treat each other with love and respect, assume good intentions, and call each other in, not call each other out.
